The Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing (FMRS) was established in 1993 and is one of the 18 laboratories of the School of Forestry and Natural Environment of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. FMRS offers graduate and postgraduate courses in fields related to management and monitoring of forest ecosystems. Its research interests involve the use of Earth Observation data, Geographic Information Systems, and digital photogrammetry for developing products and services related to:
- Natural environment monitoring,
- Management and protection of natural ecosystems,
- Forest fire management, and
- Forest biomass assessment in the framework of international protocols, such as LULUCF.
The unit has a long-standing experience in developing methodologies and algorithms for forest and forest fuel mapping, automated burned area mapping, and optimizing rice cultivation. FMRS has participated in a large number of National as well as EU-funded projects and has successfully organized seminars and conferences, both national and international. It is a member of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) and is also chairing the Forest Fire Special Interest Group (EARSeL-FFSIG). FMRS members have published numerous scientific articles in international journals and conference proceedings, and they also participate in national (Ministry of Environment) and international committees (GOFC-GOLD Fire IT).
