Course Overview
This 1 day course provides delegates with an introduction to the basic aspects of space, giving an overview of the technical, management and economic challenges and issues related to space activities/projects.
The course is intended for the non-technical audience who are joining a space company or institute and will provide a comprehensive though non technical overview of all factors that impact the design, operation, financing and management of space projects/activities.

The Objectives

The introductory course aims to give an introduction to all aspects of space activities such as space missions, space history, technology, launch vehicles and space management, economics and space policy.
Delegates should leave the course with a knowledge of:
• Technical Challenges in space;
• Space History, How did we get here?
• Space Applications;
• Economics of Space
• Managing Space Projects
• Space Policy/Law and the future of space
By the end of the course, each delegate should have a good understanding of the basic elements of space. The course intends to provide a general and introductory overview of all facets of past, current and future space activities for the newcomer in the field.

Program:

09:00-10:30: Space, The Final Frontier (Introduction, Solar System, planets, elements of a space mission including space segment, launch vehicles, ground segment, Space Environment issues/forces/disturbances, Space Debris living in space, Space Architecture/systems of systems/space exploration, Space History -the beginning of the space age/space race, Sputnik, Apollo, International Space Station, Mars, Space Missions-examples)

10:30-11:00: Coffee Break

11:00-13:00: Space Applications Examples (Earth Observation, Navigation, Telecommunications, Space Science, Human Space Flight, Space Robotics/Space Exploration). An overview of recent space missions will be given along with some of the business prospects/cases for each space application

13:00-14:00: Lunch

14:00-15:30: Space Technology (Orbits, Platforms/spacecraft subsystems, Payloads, Launch Vehicles, Space Operations, Re-entry, space systems engineering). A non-technical overview of the building blocks which consist a space mission will be given.

15:30-16:00 Coffee Break

16:00-17:30 Space Business (Economics, Management, contracts, politics/policy, Law). An overview will be given on the size and composition of the space industry (globalization, commercial aspects), the political scene (motives, laws, policy and regulations) and space economics (cost estimating, challenges, contracting, insurance)
