Digital Systems and Computer Architecture Laboratory (DSCAL) of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, serves research, development and educational activities about the design and architecture of computer systems, as well as, the interactions between hardware and software on performance, energy/power consumption and reliability for high-performance and embedded systems, covering microprocessors, accelerators, memory systems, GPUs, FPGAs and ASICs. The research and development activities related to space technologies and applications focus on On-board Data Systems and especially in the following:
- Payload Data Processing (system, hardware & software technologies)
- On-Board Data Management
- Microelectronics for Digital Applications (methodologies, digital devices and technologies)
Committed to its vision about “Space Technology Designed in Greece”, DSCAL is able to supply the world space supply chain with state-of-the-art IP cores, implementing Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) recommended standards. The cutting-edge technology IP cores include real-time data and image compression for optical and hyperspectral sensors (CCSDS 122.0-B-1, CCSDS 121.0-B-2, CCSDS 123.0-B-1), channel coding (CCSDS LDPC codes) and authenticated encryption (AES GCM). Furthermore, its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) index is high through its participation in ESA PROBA-3 mission during which DSCAL developed an image compression IP core which will be hosted in an FPGA in the ASPIICS Coronagraph System Payload Control Box.
